On Christmas Eve 1971, 17-year-old Juliane Koepcke boarded LANSA Flight 508 with her mother, bound for the Peruvian city of Pucallpa. She could never have imagined that within hours, she would be the sole survivor of one of the most extraordinary aviation disasters in history.

When the aircraft broke apart during a violent thunderstorm, Juliane fell thousands of feet into the Amazon rainforest — still strapped into her row of seats.
