The Battle of the Pockets and MacArthur’s Departure – Episode 610

This week Seth Paridon and John Parshall dig into the Battle of the Pockets on Bataan in February 1942. As the Japanese continue to try and push their advantage along the rear battle position, after having forced the Fil-American forces to retreat from their main line of resistance, the month before, The previously victorious Japanese run into a buzz saw of defensive lines. The Japanese continue to try to push their advantage but make absolutely no headway, and before long, begin to run out of men and supplies. Japanese General Homma is forced to make a call to suspend offensive operations thus ceding the battlefield to the victorious Filipinos and Americans. Despite the odds stacked against them the Fil-Americans beat the Japanese on Luzon, but because of their pathetic supply situation, are unable to capitalize on their victory. In the meantime, the situation despite the victory in the Philippines remains bleak. In Washington DC it has decided that general MacArthur will be evacuated.
