In February 1982, the state of Rhode Island has just begun allowing television cameras into its courtrooms, turning the trial into a national obsession. Reporters swarm Newport, viewers tune in by the hundreds of thousands, and spectators debate whether the impeccably dressed defendant is a wronged husband or a fortune hunter who finally went too far. Claus pleads not guilty, refuses to testify and watches silently as his wife Sunny's stepchildren accuse him of trying to murder their mother.

Megyn Kelly traces the prosecution’s explosive case: the maid who found insulin and syringes in Claus’s closet, doctors who believe Sunny was secretly injected, and a financial motive worth roughly fourteen million dollars. The defense insists there was no crime, that Sunny’s drinking, medications and secretive habits caused her comas, and that the evidence was gathered by a family determined to destroy Claus. After six days of deliberations, the jury reaches its verdict. But just when the case appears closed, a Harvard law professor receives a phone call that will turn the prosecution upside down.
