This week we revisit an episode from 2020, adding some fresh questions and analysis on its lessons in GOP history from a 2022 perspective. Is Donald Trump losing his populist grip on the Republican Party after 6 long years, a failed re-election, a failed campaign to reverse that result, and the January 6 insurrection?
According to recent polls, critical editorials from The New York Post and Wall Street Journal, and an abscess of Trump coverage on Fox News, that may be the case. But does this mean the GOP is turning from populism toward more moderate leadership?
That’s a very different question. And our special guest for the repodcast, Dr. Geoffrey Kabaservice (author of Rule and Ruin: The Downfall of Moderation and The Destruction of the Republican Party) suggests that populist momentum in the GOP predated Trump by decades, and could remain dominant for some time.
To look ahead with clarity at the 2022 and 2024 elections, we need to review with accuracy the forces that shape today’s politics. Tune in for a fluently knowledgeable revisit of GOP party dynamics with Dr. Geoffrey Kabaservice.
