California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) Professor Kim Dwinell Teaches us The Science of Surfing: A Surfside Girls Guide to the Ocean a graphic novel published through Top Shelf Productions, an IDW Publishing imprint.
Professor of Animation at CSULB, Kim Dwinell, releases her third graphic novel in Surfside Girls series entitled The Science of Surfing: A Surfside Girls Guide to the Ocean a graphic novel published through Top Shelf Productions, an IDW Publishing imprint.
I had the pleasure of speaking with Professor Dwinell about art, surfing, science and craft beer along with my experiences at Cal State Long Beach in the teaching credential program.
Professor Dwinell along with the assistance of a science professor at CSULB, takes us on a youth friendly journey about oceanography all via her love of the ocean and surfing, turning the most stubborn learner into a science fan.
I have said a million times over that science is taught wrong in the United States as I remember from my youth the my teacher went through a 45-minute lecture using Greek and Latin jargon to only find out that the big pay off at the end was, "...and that's how you make a car tire (or soda bottle, I can't remember exactly which one, but it was something mundane)."
That one lesson left a bad taste in my mouth about science, causing me to think for so many years that it was just a bunch of ego maniacs doing nothing significant in the classroom.
However, Professor Dwinell, through art reopened my eyes and in over 100 pages, sent me running to the beach.
After our conversation, I owe Professor Dwinell a beer at the very least and waving to her from the safety of the sand as she catches some waves.
