Cold sores are easily the most common type of herpes virus to infect humans. There are a lot of people who experience chronic or recurrent cold sores or shingles. Rachel has worked in pharmacies for over 20 years and has a lot of experience both personally and professionally with cold sores. People are always looking for ways to prevent them as not only are they contagious, but they can also be unsightly. If you get a lot of cold sores this is an indicator that your immune system needs some support. There have been lots of studies on selenium and its ability to reduce the severity and frequency of viral infections. In this way it can be very effective at reducing cold sores. Dr Cabot calls selenium the ‘viral birth control pill’ as it stops the ability of viruses to replicate. Vitamin D is another nutrient that is critical for the brain and immune system. If you are someone who experiences recurring cold sores, look at taking selenium and checking your vitamin D level.
