PADRES POSTCAST: San Diego PADRES SCORE 3 Unanswered Runs Late, Top AZ D’Backs 3-2, WIN SERIES 2-1

José Iglesias’ RBI single on the heels of Ryan O’Hearn’s 1st home run as a Padre capped an epic 2-run 9th-inning comeback, and Mason Miller struck out the side to slam the door on an emphatic 3-2 win that gave the Pads the 2-1 series win over the Arizona Diamondbacks in Phoenix.

 

The win- San Diego’s 9th in their last 11 games- moves the Padres within 2 games of the LA Dodgers in the NL West, and into 2nd place ahead of the NY Mets in the NL Wild Card race.

 

O’Hearn tied the game with a solo homer leading off the 9th, Xander Bogaerts- who had homered in the 7th to cut the lead to 2-1-  doubled, and Iglesias drove him in to give the Pads the lead.

 

The Pads’ bullpen was outstanding again, with Jason Adam, Adrian Morejon (W, 9-4) and Miller (Sv, 1/20) giving up no runs from the 5th inning on after starter Nestor Cortes- making his SD debut- was taken out after 4 2/3 innings. Cortes gave up 2 runs on 3 hits, striking out 3 & walking 3.

The Pads head back home for a 3-game series against the Boston Red Sox tomorrow night at Petco Park, with 1st pitch set for 6:40 PT.

 

Nick Pivetta (11-3, 2.73 ERA) will take the mound for the Padres against the Red Sox’s Walker Buehler. (6-6, 5.74)
