329. Entitlement - The Disease Destroying Men

Entitlement is easy to spot in someone else, but much harder to recognize in yourself. In this episode of The Impossible Life Podcast, Nick Surface and Garrett Unclebach take aim at one of the most subtle mindsets destroying Christian men: the belief that life, people, opportunities, or outcomes owe you something. Entitlement does not always begin with obvious arrogance. Sometimes it starts with a quiet thought like “I should have,” “they should know,” “this should be easier,” or “that’s not fair.” Left unchecked, that thought can rob a man of purpose, maturity, relationships, and godly character.

Nick and Garrett unpack entitlement as the opposite of servant leadership. Entitlement claims rights for your own benefit, while Jesus modeled the way of laying down rights for the benefit of others. Philippians 2 shows Christ, who had every right, making Himself nothing, taking the nature of a servant, and becoming obedient even to death on a cross. That is the standard for Christian masculinity: not weakness, passivity, or letting people walk over you, but strength used to serve. Strong men do not need everything to go their way before they love, give, lead, and make things better.

This conversation exposes the subtle seeds of entitlement: blame, overestimating your value, craving recognition, demanding your rights, and expecting others to meet emotional needs only God can fill. Those seeds grow into expectation, disappointment, resentment, withdrawal, and justification. But faith in Jesus gives men a better way. Instead of asking, “Why isn’t this serving me?” a godly man learns to ask, “How can I serve here? How can I bless this place? How can I love people like Christ?” If you want to live with purpose, grow in maturity, walk in faith, and become the kind of man God can use, entitlement has to die.
