Episode 3 - Puja of Commoners | বারো ঘরের দুর্গা

Durga Puja had evolved from a festival for aristocrats to a festival of commoners like us. The British era also witnessed revolution in the festival over the years! In the year 1790, a group of 12 friends at Guptipara in Hooghly decided to make Durga Puja, a festival for everyone. Which is today’s ‘BaaroYaari’ puja. The Swadeshi movement was at its peak in the year 1919. Even Subhas Chandra Bose took the help of Barwari Puja to raise a mass movement against the British. The Durga Puja organized at Simla Byam Samiti by Netaji was called Swadeshi Thakur because the idol of Goddess Durga wore the attire of khadi and weapons were made of iron and bronze. Durga Puja went through another revolutionary change in 1985. Asian paints Sharad Shamman was started this year. Moving away from simple Pandals, the era of theme puja began.
