First published in 1907, The Moonlit Road by Ambrose Bierce is a gothic horror story that tells of the murder of Julia Hetman—and the varying perspectives on the event.

Part psychological horror, part mystery, The Moonlit Road features unreliable narrators—including the ghost of Julia Hetman.

Though one of Bierce’s less-known short stories, to me this is one of his best. With terror at the forefront, we discover how a snap-decision rooted in jealousy can destroy multiple lives—and how the mind may be the darkest and scariest place of all.
