After a crucial and decisive victory at Seonghwan, the Imperial Japanese Army marched towards the last Chinese defensive position in Korea: the historic city of Pyongyang. With knowledge of the inevitable Japanese offensive, the Chinese army had ample time to prepare. A larger army and better defensive position favored a Chinese victory but would the experienced leadership of the Japanese military find a way through the Chinese defenses?
