Wayne Gilbert--a retired teacher and professor of English and educational psychology--was diagnosed with Parkinson's in 2005. Since his diagnosis, he has taken refuge in poetry, having written hundreds of "Parkie" poems, which he refers to as "metaphor medicine." In this episode, Wayne explains the importance of using metaphors in poetry to navigate the complexities of living with Parkinson's and performs a few of his favorite poems.
