MEPs have today been looking at what initiatives the EU can take to help people deal with surging inflation fuelled by escalating food and energy prices following Russia’s war against Ukraine. They’re also assessing the most effective way of imposing a windfall tax on the profits of energy companies.
Ireland South MEP Billy Kelleher says energy companies like Electric Ireland have an obligation to lessen the burden on hard-pressed consumers and families trying to cope with rising costs. He says they should forego making any profits in these times of crises.
