In today’s episode we’ll speak about how the death of Christ was a sacrifice which our Lord offered for you and for your salvation, so you could enter Heaven and spend the rest of eternity with God. The Holy Mass is the very same Sacrifice of the Cross, but offered in an unbloody manner. We consider the ultimate purpose (the four “ends”) of the Sacrifice of the Cross and the Sacrifice of the Mass. Finally, we look at some ways to benefit spiritually from the Passion and Death of our Lord, and how to unite our sufferings with His. We’ll consider the amazing witness of St. Polycarp, Bishop of Smyrna, that led to his martyrdom.

- The Sacrifice of the Mass and the Sacrifice of the Cross are the SAME sacrifice, according to the Catechism of the Catholic Church (numbers 1362 through 1367). Here is n. 1366-1367:
“1366 The Eucharist is thus a sacrifice because it re-presents (makes present) the sacrifice of the cross, because it is its memorial and because it applies its fruit.”
“1367 The sacrifice of Christ and the sacrifice of the Eucharist are one single sacrifice: "The victim is one and the same: the same now offers through the ministry of priests, who then offered himself on the cross; only the manner of offering is different." "And since in this divine sacrifice which is celebrated in the Mass, the same Christ who offered himself once in a bloody manner on the altar of the cross is contained and offered in an unbloody manner... this sacrifice is truly propitiatory.” [Council of Trent (1562 A.D.), Doctrina de SS. Missae sacrificio, c.2: DS 1743; see Hebrews 9:14, 27]
