#164 - How Do You Build your SCI Community after Injury? with Kelly Sydnor
Even as COVID protocols have relaxed in hospital settings and family members have more access to being bedside with their SCI loved ones, there is still a tremendous gap across the US in the knowledge and expertise needed to respond to a SCI patient nationwide. The first critical decision made for a spinal cord injury is where to transport the injured person. Most 911 call centers are not familiar with the location of the 14 SCI model centers and SCI trauma centers. The decisions for transitioning to an appropriate rehab facility can be equally frought with uninformed decision making. Our guest today has been there as a mom of a son injured in 2011. She calls herself the Trauma Mamma as she is one of the SCI moms who reaches out to new SCI families in their time if overwhelm, families often struggling to understand SCI and caught in the medical system often working with medical teams who have little SCI expertise. Listen in as Kelly and Louise reflect on what they had to learn in the critical first weeks and months of injury and how this might help you or a friend navigate their way in the first months of SCI of a loved one.
Join us in building this SCI community as we connect and create a network of practical tips and support for SCI families and friends and medical staff working to provide the best care of their loved one to survive the first year of injury.
The creation of the Blink of an Eye non profit resource library is underway now. It will be a repository for the wisdom of SCI families, SCI information needed in the first year of injury, guidance, inspiration, and statistics that can empower families to guide the course of the SCI patient’s healing and advocate for their well being and their family's well being. Make sure to follow @BlinkofaneyeNonprofit on facebook and instagram for updates on the resource library.
Blink of an Eye is created by Louise Phipps Senft and co-produced by Louise Phipps Senft and Zera Bloom. Theme music is by Victoria Vox.
