The people ask God for a king (1 Samuel 8:4-9): Why can’t we be like other nations?
The king asks God for a temple: Why can’t we have a decent, honorable place?
God’s answers to these requests are worth thinking about:
1. He doesn’t call them or us to be like other nations.
2. He does want to build a house himself, not a stone building, and he wants to build it of us.
By now we should expect the the way God fulfils these, the people’s prayers, and his own purpose. It is through Jesus Christ:
The true king
The true temple of God
God does listen to his people’s prayers, but he turns them into the direction of his own purpose. When you and I pray truly and sincerely we are opening ourselves up to discover a much greater purpose than we first prayed for.
