Health & Fitness:Medicine
Dr. Tyson Becker is a fellowship trained Army trauma surgeon and consultant to the US Army Surgeon General for General Surgery
In this episode he describes how surgeons must be prepared for operating outside their normal comfort with a story about needing to do a neurosurgery in a remote location at 7500 feet when weather prevented evacuation. He also discusses and provides an example of how combat surgeons must make decisions based on limited supplies that aren’t encountered in stateside civilian practice. Humanitarian surgical care in Ghana, Africa and Central America are described. He talks about how he was led to develop the Strategic Trauma Readiness Center of San Antonio (STaRC), and how the experience and knowledge of learned in past high-volume surgical periods is used to prepare surgeons and small teams for upcoming combat surgery missions.
