Mark 6:1-6 (NIV)
A Prophet Without Honor
6 Jesus left there and went to his hometown, accompanied by his disciples. 2 When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed. “Where did this man get these things?” they asked. “What’s this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing? 3 Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon? Aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him. 4 Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.” 5 He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. 6 He was amazed at their lack of faith.
How has familiarity with Jesus blocked you from seeing who he really is?
Sometimes being familiar with Jesus lessens my acknowledgment of His power and majesty. I tend to see Jesus as my friend or as my father and I feel Him close to me and I tend to overlook the fact that He has given His life not just for me but for all those who have also put their trust in Him all over the world. He was also there at the beginning of creation and will be there forever and has control over all things.
Lord, I am so blessed to know you as my Lord, my Savior yet still my friend. You do for me what no one else can. Help me to never forget that you are so much more, Creator, Redeemer, Counselor, Bread of Life, and King of Kings! I need to remember that you are beyond awesome and worthy of all glory, honor praise, and worship forever and ever. May my heart and mind never become so comfortable with your friendship that I would forget who You are. Amen
