Woodwind Family

Index The woodwind family of instruments are instruments made of wood, metal, or even plastic. Instruments in this family use a reed to produce their sound, with the exception of the flute which is played by blowing across an open hole in the mouthpiece. Instruments in this family include the flute, clarinet, oboe and the basson. These instruments are the main instruments employed by the modern orchestra. Other instruments in this family include the saxophone, the bass clarinet and the recorder.
