Opened in 1908, Pennhurst was originally meant to house physically and mentally disabled patients for either permanent treatment or reformation back into society. Just 4 years later, it was already overcrowded and by 1968, 60 years after it opened, a local news report exposed rampant patient abuse and almost 10 years later, the facility finally shut down for good.
