In this Podcast we interview local author Mark Quinn.
Mark has just published his new novel Europejski which is an historical novel based in Poland from the late 1970’s to the fall of the Berlin Wall and beyond and explores troubling questions of when it is right to withhold the truth, and when deception is justified by the greater good.
It certainly does that but through exploring political intrigue we get to know more about the balance of forces that made up Poland in the time of Soviet occupation, about the power of the Unions through Solidarity and the role of student occupations, the balance in Communist Poland between church and state and the relationship between the Soviet Union and Poland when the edifice of communism is falling apart.
It is also a love story of frustrated passion imprisoned by politics and upheaval and also of political ambition that raises the crucial question in all societies of what is the driving force of politics, conviction or personal ambition.
It is incredibly well researched and a feast for those who like their history embroidered with political intrigue that makes hard fact spring to life so that through the form of fiction a novel as well written as this can help us to understand the truth.
