Opera has launched MiniPay, a stablecoin-based non-custodial wallet that allows users to send and receive funds instantly using just a phone number. It is currently available in Nigeria on Android via Opera Mini, with plans to expand to other African countries. MiniPay offers fast transactions, low fees, and support for local payment methods.
US fintech Olliv expands crypto kiosks to South Africa

US fintech Olliv has expanded its crypto kiosks to South Africa, with nine kiosks installed across KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng. This is Olliv's first entry into the African market. The kiosks allow users to buy and sell Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin using cash or debit card.
Jay-Z And Jack Dorsey funded Btrust Acquires African Bitcoin Firm Qala

₿trust, a 2021 nonprofit organization funded by Jack Dorsey and rapper Jay-Z, has officially acquired Qala as of the 1st September 2023. Qala is an African Bitcoin organization that trains Bitcoin and Lightning Network engineers while ₿trust exists to decentralise the development of Bitcoin software, this acquisition is part of that mission, to drive the development and education of Bitcoin open-source engineers from across the Global South.
Qala will rebrand as the ₿trust Builders Programme and continue to operate under its current leadership. The program will continue to offer training and support to African Bitcoin developers, with a focus on building the infrastructure and applications needed to make Bitcoin more accessible and useful to people on the continent.
Kotani Pay receives a $2m pre-seed funding

Kotani Pay, a Kenyan crypto-based payments startup, raised $2 million in pre-seed funding to expand its platform to new markets in Africa and develop new features. The platform has the potential to revolutionize the way that Africans send and receive money.
VALR introduces VALR Pay, Now Available At All Pick n Pay Tills Across South Africa

VALR Pay, a cryptocurrency payment service, is now available at all Pick n Pay tills in South Africa. Customers can use Bitcoin to pay for goods and services at Pick n Pay stores nationwide. Onboard raises $1.9 million

Nestcoin's Onboard Wallet, a global, mobile-friendly platform that simplifies the process of buying, selling, and storing cryptocurrencies, raised $1.9 million in a fund round led by Hashed Emergent. The investment will be used to expand Nestcoin's reach in Africa and develop new products and services. Onboard was also part of 15 global brands that took part in the launch of Base, alongside Coca-Cola, Atari, Open Sea and Optimus.
US court finds South African company Cape Cookies guilty of a major crypto scam

South African company Cape Cookies and its CEO Willem Breytenbach were found guilty of orchestrating a $20M cryptocurrency scam. They face up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
