As his brother, Mike, commented, "It's a bit like taking up boxing and fighting Mike Tyson in your first bout." Join Steve and his guests as they discuss all aspects of the trail, from gear to Lyme Disease, then back to trail magic and injury.

Episode #523 - Michelle Michaud (Fyrfly)

Jan 8th, 2026 8:00 AM

Michelle Michaud is our guest today. She has completed the Appalachian Trail three times, having been on trail every year since the late 90s.                 Her love for the AT is apparent, and she has managed to parlay that love into a business, helping hikers with their logistics and training as they try to fulfill their own Appalachian Trail dream.                                   You can find out more by visiting Michelle's website, http://www.appalachiantrailhikingsupport.com/ and her Facebook account at https://www.facebook.com/WanderingBootsAppalachianTrailhikingsupport, and her Instagram account at https://www.instagram.com/wanderingbootsat/ .             Also today, Michael Glavin, the inventor and owner of Zenbiy, with the Zenbivy sleep system, helps Steve make up his mind for the final big purchase for his upcoming Appalachian Trail thru-hike. Check out their site at https://zenbivy.com/ Finally, the accountability blog turns to the subject of food. I used my hike in 2024 on the South West Coast Path in the UK to help raise money for my absolute favorite charity, Parenting Matters, on whose board I've been privileged to serve for over a decade. You can learn more about the hike and the organization–and donate–by visiting https://parentingmattersfl.org/eventer/hike-with-steve-empowering-parents-one-step-at-a-time/edate/2024-04-15/. I hope you want to support this critical mission. Don't forget. Episode #522 - Dr Rob Scanlon

Jan 1st, 2026 8:00 AM

We welcome Dr Rob Scanlon to the podcast today to talk about five essential skills that hikers need to learn to avoid becoming a depressing statistic on trail.                     Rob shares anecdotes and data to illustrate those five skills, and he has presented a book rich in detail that will benefit most hikers. I'll certainly be paying attention to several of the points Rob makes in his book as I hit the Appalachian Trail this year.                                 You can follow Rob on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/dr_robscanlon?igsh=bTRxMTdoNzl4YTN6&utm_source=ig_contact_invite , and you can find his book on Amazon at https://a.co/d/dFW1wBj .                                             In my accountability blog this week, I introduce you all to a new diet that I'll be starting next week. Episode #521 - James Kinch (Firewalker)

Dec 25th, 2025 8:00 AM

The self-deprecating James Kinch is on the show today, claiming the title of the "Fattest Known Time" on the Appalachian Trail, having twice thru-hiked the trail, starting at well over 300lbs each time. James has published his journal of the hike, and he serves as an inspiration to those who convince themselves that they can't do this hike for many reasons, one of which is often their weight. James just got on with it and made it to Katahdin each time. You can check out his book at Fat Man Walking: 330 Pounds and 2200 Miles on the Appalachian Trail and read his blog on Substack at Middle-class Homeless | James Kinch | Substack. This week on my accountability blog, I log further physical and gear progress as the year draws to a close. I used my hike last year on the South West Coast Path in the UK to help raise money for my absolute favorite charity, Parenting Matters, on whose board I've been privileged to serve for over a decade. Episode #520 - Ellen Langford (Adventurine)

Dec 18th, 2025 8:00 AM

Ellen Langford, or Adventurine, joins us today. Ellen is a professional artist who had dreamed of hiking the Appalachian Trail for several years before 2025 opened a window for her. On the trail, she found logistics to be challenging, yet utterly "embraced the suck" as she knocked off 1700 miles before an unfortunate health condition curtailed her hike. She took her art tools of the trade with her, sketching as she went along. You can catch up with Ellen and her art at her website, http://www.ellenlangford.com/ . Also today, Nina Banducci introduced us to Polarsteps, an app that tracks and records our journeys, incorporating photos and text. Nina will be out on various trails next year to provide trail magic and show off the app to hikers. I intend to use it on my upcoming AT thru-hike next year. You can find out more at https://www.polarsteps.com/ Then, my accountability blog focuses more on gear, as more "stuff" has arrived. It's getting real!! I used my hike last year on the South West Coast Path in the UK to help raise money for my absolute favorite charity, Parenting Matters, on whose board I've been privileged to serve for over a decade. Episode #519 - Jesse Cody & Mike Rose (Hike the Good Hike)

Dec 11th, 2025 8:00 AM

We meet Jesse Cody and Mike Rose today, and hear about their non-profit, Hike the Good Hike, an organization committed to enhance mental wellness through nature. They have partnered with several well-known outdoor brands to provide a path for a disparate cohort of people taking on US hikes in 2026. Jesse and Mike value the stories that hikers tell and this podcast will help tell some of those stories as we meet most, if not all, of the 2026 cohort in the coming weeks. I encourage you all to find out more about this deserving organization at their website, Hike The Good Hike and, should you wish to donate to the cause, you can do so here. Give Back with HTGH Also today, we meet Max Kiel from Hyperlite Mountain Gear, as he shares his knowledge about the four packs I wanted to learn about. I had my clear preference coming into the conversation, and he clarified my thinking. Here's the pack I chose. Finally today, my accountability blog records the hiatus I had in my training before picking up once more, earlier this week. I've also got gear, food and transportation issues to share with you all. I used my hike last year on the South West Coast Path in the UK to help raise money for my absolute favorite charity, Parenting Matters, on whose board I've been privileged to serve for over a decade.
