Josie talks Coronavirus

Josie is the daughter of one of my closest friends. She was terrified of me the first few years of her life, and it destroyed my heart. Then one day she decided I was okay. So now she's nine, and one of my favorite kids, along with her little sister Jessie. Using three-way calling, Josie and I called a few people we know to ask them about their Covid-19 experiences. This was recorded in April 2020, at hopefully the height of the pandemic and physical distancing. The Storybook Project, with Denise Chai and Gem Jones

Denise Chai is the outreach coordinator for The Storybook Project of Arkansas. From the website: “Our motto was - and is - ‘keeping families connected through reading,’ ” said project founder Pat Oplinger of Cherokee Village. She started Storybook in 1997 with a few other volunteers from a local church. The original purpose, she said, “was to raise the literacy level of both inmates and their children, thus raising education and self confidence levels and family unity.” Gem (Undrea) Jones spent about two decades in prison, and she talks to us a little about what got her there, but mostly about what the Storybook Project meant to her during those years and beyond. Susan Curtis is an attorney in Oklahoma who is the founder of Girl Attorney, LLC. Each state has its own Girl Attorney Facebook page, where we can discuss legal questions, procedure, local court practices, good and bad experiences in the legal field, and anything else we want. It's been a great resource for me, and I have been impressed that we keep the posts almost entirely law-related. Girls just wanna be professional! Zara Abbasi-Chef, Friend

Zara Abbasi Wilkerson is lots of things, and still deciding who she is. Of course, who we are changes during our lives. In this conversation, we discuss Zara's young life moving around every year or so and how it has affected her. We talk about how she became a pastry chef, why she stopped being a pastry chef (for the public), and what she's doing now. We also discuss her motivation behind starting a private group of women who are looking for friends with whom they can share common interests.
