In 2006, an unprecedented resource was created to allow the public to identify and access data about sex offenders nationwide. The Dru Sjodin National Sex Offender Public Website, or NSOPW, was signed into law in 2006 as a result of “Dru’s Law” – legislation created after 22 year old Dru Sjodin was kidnapped and murdered by a serial rapist who had been released from prison despite being classified as a Level 3 sex offender – meaning he was likely to reoffend. Dru’s death led to this resource being created, establishing a safer world for many. Episode 485: The Disappearance of Toni Sharpless

Toni Sharpless, a single mother who was having a fun night out in Philadelphia, PA in August 2009, seemingly vanished into thin air. She drove away from her friend in the early morning hours and was never seen again. Despite an extensive investigation and a letter being written 3 years later with information about what happened to her car, Toni remains missing to this day. Did she meet with foul play? Did she get into an accident that was covered up? Was she trafficked? Her case remains open to this day. Episode 484: The Lainz Angels of Death

The Lainz Angels of Death were four Austrian nurse’s aides—Waltraud Wagner, Maria Gruber, Irene Leidolf, and Stephanija Meyer—who worked at Lainz General Hospital in the 1980s. From 1983-1989 they killed at least 15 patients while pretending to care for them. Their methods later included forcing water into patients’ lungs or overdosing them on medications to make their deaths look natural. In 1991 their reign of terror came to an end and all 4 women were sent to prison. While they maintained that the murders were mercy killings, many believe these women were sick and evil. The Lainz Angels of Death case remains a chilling example of medical murder and failures in oversight.
