You're Not Crazy. Childcare Is.
Gloria breaks down how we’re all breaking down: parents, teachers, and providers. And Kristen Bell joins to “call it like it is” on the cost of childcare. Parents are languishing on waitlists or drowning in tuition bills. Teachers are underpaid. And providers can barely afford to keep the lights on. “We set families up to struggle. We put every barrier we can in their way. And then when they do need assistance, we demonize them as though they've done something wrong and they haven't.” With Lauren Kennedy and Sarah Muncey from Neighborhood Villages, and parents, teachers, and administrators from Ellis Early Education Center in Boston, MA. This podcast is presented by Neighborhood Villages, and is brought to you with generous support from The McCormick Foundation, Trust for Learning, and Spring Point Partners. Birth of a Broken System
Gloria investigates where everything went wrong for childcare in America, and Kristen Bell joins to give Nixon a piece of her mind. “That's the sound of progress dying in the crucible of American politics.” Gloria digs into the shame, guilt, and divisions baked into our earliest day nurseries, and reveals how old-fashioned gender norms and blatant racism killed promising federally-funded, early childcare programs. With Dorothy E. Roberts, Sonya Michel, Alma Gottlieb, Ruth Hoffman, O’Niel Dillon, and Charlotte Riviera (yes – Gloria’s mom). Good Childcare *Can* Work
Gloria explores the many places where childcare is working for parents – from Berlin, Germany, to Quebec, Canada, and even Patagonia HQ in Ventura, California. “Women are able to go back to work, families can actually afford good childcare, and the system more than pays for itself? Am I on another planet?” Kristen Bell joins Gloria (from outer space) to clue her in on America’s very own top-secret, high-quality, federally-funded childcare system. Plus, Lauren Kennedy and Sarah Muncey from Neighborhood Villages return to tell us how we can make this childcare dream a reality for all. With Caitlin and Charles Vestal, Pierre Fortin, Linda Smith, Ssgt. Alba Ruiz, and Patagonia’s Jenna Johnson. This podcast is presented by Neighborhood Villages, and is brought to you with generous support from The McCormick Foundation, Trust for Learning, and Spring Point Partners. How We Save Ourselves
Gloria chats with Elizabeth Warren about how we transform our country’s broken childcare system into one that’s accessible for all. “This is the moment to raise your voice. We have this opportunity to do it, but it's going to take all of us to push until it gets done.” Then, we meet a ragtag group of activists in Portland, Oregon fighting for a free, high-quality, universal preschool program in their community. And “Call It Like It Is” correspondent Kristen Bell joins once more to talk to you – yes you – about how to get involved in the childcare revolution. With Senator Elizabeth Warren, Teresa Ramos from Illinois Action for Children, and parents, educators, and activists from Portland's Universal Preschool NOW! and Preschool for All movements. Laugh, cry, be outraged, and hear solutions! Join our community: https://www.facebook.com/groups/nooneiscomingtosaveus Are you ready to join the childcare revolution? Call or write to your elected officials! Here are some talking points to get you started: Let’s talk about dollars and cents. There's a 13:1 return on investment for every dollar we spend on early education. That's a better return than anything else we do as a nation. Kids who attend early learning programs do better in school, are more likely to graduate from high school, have better overall health, and go on to earn more money over their lifetime. We can’t have true gender equity without universal childcare. It's critical to getting the millions of women we lost from the labor-force during the pandemic back to work. And, it ensures that women are in all of the places where decisions are made, from the C-Suite to the halls of Congress. High quality early education prevents racial achievement gaps before they even happen. And good childcare reform should mean that early education and care workers – who are largely women of color – are given the salaries and benefits that they deserve. Universal childcare is good business. Employers need employees; employees need childcare. The pandemic has shown us that it's pretty much as simple as that. Plus, saving families $30,000/year also puts more money in their pockets – money that can go to supporting local businesses and boosting local economies. The Fight for Childcare Starts at Home (with Eve Rodsky)
Childcare doesn’t just happen out in the world. It also happens in each and every home where a child lives. In this bonus episode, we hear from Eve Rodsky, the author of Fair Play (Reese’s Book Club October ‘19), about how to create more cooperative homes and families. “While we're waiting for systems to change and fighting for policies, we can also take agency to make things better in our home - to invite men into their full power in the home so that women can step out into their full power in the world.” For Eve, that means shifting away from a 50/50 division of labor to what she calls an “ownership mindset.” This podcast is presented by Neighborhood Villages, and is brought to you with generous support from The McCormick Foundation, Trust for Learning, and Spring Point Partners.
