Deep Dive: Is Learning a Consequence of Thinking?

How important is mindset when developing cultures of thinking in classrooms? Is learning a consequence of thinking? Can using thinking routines in the classroom change teachers and student engagement? Dr Ron Ritchhart a Senior Research Associate and Principal Investigator at Harvard Project Zero where his work focuses on the development of school and classroom culture as prime vehicles for developing students as powerful thinkers and learners. Ron has written and co-written a number of books which focus on how teachers can create classrooms where thinking is valued, visible and actively promoted as part of the day to day experience of all group members. We also have Emma Webber an experienced educator and Deputy Principal who works in a school in the Southeast Region in Queensland, Australia. They will discuss these questions and more to uncover how learning is integral to learning.

Are schools making students less curious? Is curiosity the 7th Global competency? Can curiosity really be taught? Our guests this week are David a Primary School Principal, Jodie a Deputy Principal, Kate who is working as the Head of Curriculum and Lisa a teacher who is teaching a grade 5/6 class this year. They will be delving deeply into the area of curiosity. Discussing topics about what does it mean to be curious and is our education system killing curiosity. They will also share their opinions from evidence and experience around if they believe curiosity can be taught and is this a disposition that is necessary for people to be life long learners. You will also get helpful tips from leaders of learning in the school and an experienced classroom teacher about how they cultivating curiosity in their classrooms and across their school community.
