The lies we tell our kids (and the one I can’t get comfy with)

Jan 20th, 2026 1:15 PM

Last year there were about 700 separate occasions where I told my daughter the plug in the bath was broken. It wasn't, I was just racing through bedtime and needed the day to end. And sometimes a bath takes too long. That one lie, however, has now turned into a daily question: "Is the plug working today?" And it got me thinking about all the things parents say just to get through the day... the “TV needs to recharge,” the ice cream truck “ran out," the shopping centre rides are “broken.”All of the necessary fibs that help you get a tiny moment of peace. But there’s one lie I still can’t get my head around and it’s the big one. Santa. In this episode, I share some of the best (and darkest) parenting lies sent in by listeners and talk about why the Santa thing hits differently for me when it comes to trust, honesty and the stories we tell our kids over and over again. If you’ve got a lie you swear by, I'd love to hear it at rachel@meandmytinyhuman.com.And if you’re enjoying the podcast please share it with someone or leave a rating or review. This podcast was recorded on the lands of the Wangal people, of the Eora Nation. The days when you want to walk out of your own life

Jan 13th, 2026 1:15 PM

Things get a little dark today. Not because anything terrible has happened, but because I want to talk honestly about what it feels like when you’re running on empty and there’s no tap-out option. After a brutal stretch of broken sleep, early wake-ups and trying to keep everything together at work and at home, I hit a point where my internal pressure cooker was well and truly at capacity. This episode is about:What happens when you’re so exhausted you start thinking about blowing up your entire lifeWhy solo parenting can feel particularly relentless when there’s no relief valveThe moment you realise doing everything means something else has to giveAnd why this year, for me, has to be about doing less - not quitting, just being smarterNo tips. No solutions. Just honesty, perspective and a reminder that feeling stretched doesn’t mean you’re failing. If you’ve ever thought, “I can’t keep going like this,” this one’s for you. This podcast was recorded on the lands of the Wangal people, of the Eora Nation. The first glimmers of “it gets easier”

Jan 6th, 2026 1:15 PM

I went into the Christmas break braced for impact, convinced that weeks without daycare were going to send me over the edge but instead, something shifted.Olivia’s almost three now and for the first time I could see what people mean when they say “it gets easier”. Slower days. Side-by-side play. Less fear of large blocks of unfilled time. A feeling that we might be climbing out of the most intense bits of this together. In this episode I also talk about money, the mental load of running everything solo and why anticipation as a parent is often harder than the thing itself. If you’re in the thick of it, I hope this gives you a bit of hope that it won’t always feel like this. This podcast was recorded on the lands of the Wangal people, of the Eora Nation. Christmas hits different when your kid finally gets it

Dec 23rd, 2025 1:15 PM

Last Christmas, Olivia was only one and she genuinely couldn't have cared less about it.This year? Entirely different story. In this episode, I’m reflecting on how quickly things change, what Christmas looks like with a two-year-old who suddenly finds everything magical and why I’ve gone from being pretty indifferent about Christmas to leaning into it.I talk about:Why Christmas with a one-year-old can feel… underwhelmingThe moment I realised this is what Christmas with kids is meant to feel likeA very risky trip to Christmas Crazy (that somehow worked out)The joy of lights, baubles, and a kid who wants to turn them on and off every dayWhy being a solo mum means I get to choose exactly what Christmas looks likeFriends’ Christmases, chosen family, and zero obligation energyIf you’re solo parenting, or navigating Christmas in a way that doesn’t look “traditional”, this one’s a gentle reminder that it doesn’t have to look any particular way to be really good. This podcast was recorded on the lands of the Wangal people, of the Eora Nation.
