Hydroxyzine is an older, first-generation antihistamine that has significant anticholinergic properties. On this episode, I discuss hydroxyzine pharmacology and clinical pearls. Itching, pain, anxiety, and insomnia are all common uses for hydroxyzine. Be aware of patients with gastroparesis or BPH as hydroxyzine can worsen these conditions. CNS depressant and anticholinergic drug interactions are the most common types of interaction with hydroxyzine.
