Kingdom Principle: “Prone to wander, Lord I feel it. Prone to leave the God I love.” The hymn writer summed it up best when describing the Christian dilemma. The old man is constantly trying to draw us away from Christ. The fight of the Christian life is to never lose sight of Jesus in the midst of all our service for him.
Martha the ___________________________
Luke 10:38–42 (ESV) — 40 But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.”
HOSPITALITY To entertain or receive a stranger (sojourner) into one’s home as an honored guest and to provide the guest with food, shelter, and protection. This was not merely an oriental custom or good manners but a sacred duty that everyone was expected to observe. Only the depraved would violate this obligation.
The issue in this text is not that Martha is doing what she is called to do, the issue is that Martha is distracted by all she is doing.
Martha, distracted with much serving, did not approve. We get the impression that she wanted to do something special for Jesus. The result was unnecessarily elaborate provision and much serving.
Martha has lost sight of what is most important. She has sought to serve the Lord to the detriment of seeking Jesus in her service. she was no longer serving Jesus, she was serving the serving.
Mary the __________________
Luke 10:39 (ESV) — 39 And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching.
Martha was anxious and overwhelmed. Mary was excited and over-joyed.
Psalm 51:7–10 (ESV) — 7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 8 Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have broken rejoice. 9 Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities. 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
Mary was a guest at the Lord’s table but Jesus was a guest at Martha’s table. Mary was being served by Jesus, but Martha was serving Jesus. I pray you see the difference.
What are we to do if we have grown cold and have lost sight of the Lord Jesus in our ministry? We must seek the Lord and we must seek his Word.
Questions to Consider
In what ways have you lost sight of Jesus in all of your serving?
What would it look like for you to seek Jesus and his Word afresh?
What promise is God calling you to believe in the midst of your parenting, marriage, career, ministry, family, finances, etc?
