UTX #015 - Smart Materials, Programmable Matter and 4D Printing

Engineering is the bottleneck of human progress.

If this sounds familiar, it's because we pointed out this fact in our episode on 3D printing. But as promised, we are now adding a whole new dimension to 3D printing to enter the world of smart and programmable materials!

Their "smartness" of smart materials derives from their capabilities to sense external conditions (such as heat or moisture), adapt their shape or other characteristics to those and thus effectively deploy a means of information processing.

When combined with additive manufacturing, these 4D-printed materials can adjust after being printed, allowing to autonomously assemble, disassemble, change, or even repair themselves!
