Hello beautiful people
On today’s podcast we have the beautiful Oceane. Oceane has completed a psychology degree with honours and is currently a midwife. Oceane is an author, co-writing a memoir, published in September of this year, with her mother Cecile, ‘The Silence Between Us: A Mother and Daughter’s Conversation Through Suicide and into Life’.
I will preface this with saying that this podcast has a trigger warning as we cover topics on mental health and suicide. If anyone needs to seek mental health support please call Lifeline: 13 11 14.
What I personally love about this conversation is Oceane’s courage. Certainly mental health in its generalised sense is becoming a more accepted theme in our society to discuss, however I still find that suicide has not had as much acceptance. Despite stigma that manifests personally as shame, Oceane shares very openly her experience of a former suicide attempt and how that has influenced her life over the past 20 years. Oceane shares how being labeled and medicated made her feel more helpless than helped, how being scheduled into a high security psychiatric ward was more traumatic than therapeutic, and what it is like to rebuild trust at home after an attempted suicide with those close around you. We speak about intergenerational trauma, the importance of listening, of having an open curiosity, of experiencing human connection over isolation, and of sharing your story. As the beautiful Brene Brown wisely says: ‘Shame grows on secrecy, silence and judgment’. We need to face shame with courage, openness and empathy, and that is certainly what Oceane has done.
Please enjoy this very important and powerful conversation, with the beautiful Oceane.
