Text: Psalm 24:1-10
1 The earth is the LORD's and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein,
2 for he has founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers.
3 Who shall ascend the hill of the LORD? And who shall stand in his holy place?
4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to what is false and does not swear deceitfully.
5 He will receive blessing from the LORD and righteousness from the God of his salvation.
6 Such is the generation of those who seek him, who seek the face of the God of Jacob. Selah
7 Lift up your heads, O gates! And be lifted up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in.
8 Who is this King of glory? The LORD, strong and mighty, the LORD, mighty in battle!
9 Lift up your heads, O gates! And lift them up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in.
10 Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, he is the King of glory! Selah
-Psa 24:1-10 ESV
THE LORD OF HOSTS, HE IS THE KING OF GLORY!
Reminiscent of God’s declaration to Moses that ‘all the earth will be filled with the glory of the Lord.’ [Num 14:21] But, David’s phraseology indicates “the earth is the Lord’s and all it contains[its fullness]”
What kind of people would God delight with? The answer in verses 3-6 almost corresponds to Psa 15.
“3 Who shall ascend the hill of the LORD? And who shall stand in his holy place?
4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to what is false and does not swear deceitfully.
5 He will receive blessing from the LORD and righteousness from the God of his salvation.
6 Such is the generation of those who seek him, who seek the face of the God of Jacob. Selah”
In v.7-10, the focus is on exalting the king’s military glory, as indicated by the repeated word ‘mighty.’ The ‘gates’ and ‘ancient doors’ should be wide open for the coming of ‘The King of Glory.’ He is the divine Messianic King, taking His seat in the temple after His military victories at the end of days.
The ‘Lord of hosts’ is presented as the mightiest warrior King returning in victory. The title reflects the truth that, although David was their king in Jerusalem, their real king was Yahweh. Later in fulfillment to prophecy, the glorious king who will enter Jerusalem is the Lord Jesus. Paul expressed that He is the Lord of heaven and earth by virtue of creation and redemption. In Col 1:15–17, Paul describes Jesus as having created everything in heaven and on earth, not only visible objects but invisible, which include the angelic host. Jesus holds everything together.
Someday the Lord of hosts will return to earth with mighty angels to execute judgment on unbelievers and to reign from the throne of David (Isa 9:6–7). He will strike down the nations. As in the vision of John,
“ From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.”[Rev 19:15,16]
