Pride is defined as a quality or state of being proud. As a delight or elation arising from an act.
That is what is celebrated every June for the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Community. Taking pride in standing up against discrimination, standing up for our human rights, standing up for our freedom, standing up to be seen.
I think context is incredibly important in why we stand. For some it might seem obvious, above everything else we are human. All human’s deserve the right to live and love out loud. That is what exists beyond learned beliefs.
This year marks 50 years since the Stonewall Inn riots, the birth of the Modern Gay Rights movement. It is the context of how we got where we are right now. LGBTQ Pride is about tearing down the walls that may divide us, so we can all live with more space around us. We can break down walls in many ways. In this episode I combine the history of the LGBTQ Community, and my own personal history with my community.
