Pundits, parents, and the public have been talking about the decline in American culture's civility and manners for some time, and not without reason. Fan behavior at the 45th Ryder Cup in New York, the coarsening rhetoric of American politicians, and no-limits social media are evidence. Many Americans, it seems, are coming of age never having been told by older family members they should respect their elders, speak politely, obey the law, and in general "be nice." If you work in a business dealing with the public, you know what I am talking about. If you teach or otherwise work in public schools, you can tell your own stories. If you are a woman, you've no doubt heard it all. What's happening is American culture jettisoned its ethical foundation, our Judeo-Christian moral consensus, and now we have no moral compass. Anything goes. We do what's right in our own eyes. This trend can be reversed, but not without a spiritual awakening and recommitment of parents to doing what's right and best by their children. If it happens at all, it will take a generation.
