Dastardly Dude Dan Sickles

Not only was Dan Sickles the shmole of the Battle of Gettysburg, he was the first person in U.S. history to get away with murder because of, "Temporary Insanity!" How did that come to be? How can a guy with the word, sick, in his name be a such a renob?
