During the race for nuclear weapons in the 1960s, the United Nuclear Corporation began operations on the largest underground uranium mine in the country, located on the Navajo reservation in Church Rock, New Mexico. The Church Rock uranium mill spill took place on July 16, 1979, when the uranium mill breached its dam--resulting in the largest nuclear disaster in US history.
