Events of life compel us to interrupt our study through Colossians for a topical study on suffering and dying well. And by studying suffering and dying well, we’ll gain biblical insight on living well. And that doesn’t mean living living sumptuously in this world, but living well in the next world
To better understand how God wants his people to deal with suffering and dying we start with the gospel that saves souls today: There is a God, you’re not him. He’s the living, almighty God; the God of the Bible; the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the author and the judge of all creation. And you’re going to meet him. And you’ve sinned against him. That’s why you’re dying. But in his mercy, he sent his son to die in your place, and he rose again to freely offer eternal life to sinners. And if you’ll trust his son to forgive your sins, he’ll forgive you and give you eternal life.
From there we talk about some of the suffering and death we’ve experienced. Then we go back to the Garden of Eden and look again at the curse that gendered suffering and ask who was cursed? and why? And to what end? Was God angry, or was He hopeful?
Then we’ll study out what we should expect to hear from God today, (whether we’re suffering or not), how we can come to a proper understanding of how the work and communication of God, Jesus & the Spirit is understood today. And what “the leading of the Spirit” is. And what being “led by the Spirit “means.
We’ll go through Paul’s lessons on suffering, and dying, and living to come to the understanding of what it means to do all of these well during our brief time in this world and the eternity we’ll spend in the next world.
