Happy Independence Day, America! This week, in celebration of July 4th, the day our country became a free and independent nation, I decided to switch it up and talk about American history. My ancestors arrived in America in the early 1630’s—that’s almost 400 years ago, before America was even born! So I have been fortunate enough to grow up listening to stories of early American history firsthand from my own family’s experiences in this great country.
As a result of all this, I have written four historical fiction books. My first novel, The Adventures of Little Big Jim, dives into the life of a settler in the 1800’s crossing The Great Plains to California. After he makes it to California he gets shanghaied on a ship heading to the Andes in South America and must do what he can to make his way back to his home and family in Monterey Bay. My next book, Coaling Station A, portrays the rise and fall of an oil boomtown during what was called the “Black Gold Rush.” Kaleidoscope documents the life of a boy living in Carmel Valley who has been given a mysterious kaleidoscope from his uncle that brings him very close to his uncle’s experiences fighting against the Germans in World War I. My most recent historical fiction novel, Journey’s End, takes our ship crew from The Adventures of Little Big Jim abroad, crossing the great Pacific ocean to China in hopes to trade jade from Big Sur for Chinese art, silks, teas, spices, and porcelain. Of course the journey is not so simple, as the crew faces reincarnated ancient Chinese gods, opium wars, corrupt officials, violent gangsters, and massive whales.
I hope you enjoy this special episode that explores America’s history and values as well as my family's extensive history living in this country.
