19: Whence Our Belief: Reason
In Chapter XIX, the author argues that faith is inherently reasonable, as God endowed humans with intelligence to receive His revelations rationally. Rejecting reason in accepting divine truths would dishonor both the individual and God, who, as a perfect and infallible authority, cannot err. The author supports this by asserting the historical authenticity of Jesus of Nazareth’s life, as recorded in the Gospels, which withstand rigorous scrutiny and testify to His divine acts, such as miracles and resurrection. Jesus established a Church to perpetuate His teachings, which must be infallible, indefectible, one, holy, catholic, and apostolic to fulfill its divine mission. Reason leads one to recognize these attributes in the true Church, and upon entering it, faith illuminated by revelation reveals truths beyond reason’s reach, yet consistent with it. The Church’s authority confirms the inspiration of the Gospels, a truth unattainable without an infallible source, rendering non-Catholic faith questionable if based on unproven assumptions.
