There are tradeoffs to be made between all forms of energy.  But high energy density and low cost are reasons why fossil fuels are likely to be used for decades to come.  That is, until we come up with a better solution that meets the requirements fulfilled by fossil fuels in terms of high energy density, high reliability, and low cost.
