Sophie Shunk, an athlete with type 1 diabetes, shares her journey and challenges in managing her condition while pursuing her athletic goals. She discusses the support she received at the Olympic Trials - some of the loudest on the course! In fact, while Sofie was the final finisher in Orlando, few athletes were called out by name more than Sofie. While watching the race I was amazed how many people knew exactly who she was and were touched by the example she was setting.
Sophie talks about her transition from elite college soccer player, to triathlon, and finally to running and the importance of setting strategic goals. She shares her experiences with injuries and the lessons she learned from races. Sophie also highlights the role of her support team, including a nutritionist, endocrinologist, and coaches, in managing her diabetes and optimizing her performance.
In this conversation, Sofie also shares her recovery and training process leading up to the California International Marathon (CIM) after the McKirdy Micro Marathon and how she overcame challenges during the race. She emphasizes the importance of resilience and pushing through failures.
Finally, Sofie talks about the Diabetes Sports Project, a nonprofit organization she co-founded to support people with diabetes in sports.
