Esther Risks Her Life | Esther 5:1-2 | Week 5 Day 1 Study of Esther

After Esther had fasted and prayed for three days, she got dressed again in her fancy royal clothes. It was time to face her fears. Let’s not forget that her fears were well-founded. 

Vashti was removed as queen (and only the Lord knows what happened to her afterward) for a very similar act of rebellion. When she was called for, she didn’t come. Now, the king’s rule was that anyone who came that wasn’t called for could be executed depending on the king’s mood. After having not been called for thirty days, this was no small risk on Esther’s part, but she knew Mordecai was right—the edict had already pronounced her death anyway. 

When she approached, the king was in a good mood. When Ahaseurus saw her, he was reminded of how much he liked her and couldn’t wait to have a conversation with Esther. This must have been such a relief to Esther!

Just in case we may forget, this whole touching the end of the scepter thing was a real and very serious thing, because the king was actually holding it, and he actually held it out for Esther to touch as she approached. There must have been a rule for the guards in the room to immediately remove anyone who did not receive such mercy. 

Can you imagine being in Esther’s situation? What would you have felt approaching your possible death?

Esther is simultaneously a victory and a tragedy. In some ways, If you look at it through a modern lens, it should be called the Victory of Mordecai and the Tragedy of Esther. Esther loses her parents and then is taken into the harem of a despotic king to be used as he wishes. Mordecai ends up, like Daniel, a very high official and ruler in his expatriated land. 

This will be a great study of Esther as we look at the emotions, the world and the meanings of one of the most cherished, and often misunderstood books of the Bible.
