The Anthropology of Ghost Hunting with Stephanie Juengling

Stephanie Juengling, PhD, received her doctoral degree in anthropology from the University of Florida. Her dissertation is titled, “‘I Am Exposed Not Only To The Paranormal, But The Deepest Secrets of Individuals’ Lives’: An Ethnography of Florida Paranormal Research Teams”. Here she describes her participant-observer work over several years that involved attending dozens of paranormal investigations. She points to the importance of paranormal tv shows in creating a substantial popular movement. She discusses the motivations of paranormal team members and the meaningful interactions she has had with them. She shares a powerful experience of synchronicity and describes a demonological intervention known as “deliverance”.
