Tim Noakes, a renowned figure in sports medicine and nutrition, shares his transformative journey from advocating a high-carbohydrate diet to embracing low-carb, high-fat principles. He emphasizes that reversing type 2 diabetes and improving overall health can be achieved by drastically reducing carbohydrate intake, a revelation that reshaped his understanding of nutrition. Throughout the conversation, Noakes reflects on his experiences in academia, the backlash he faced for his dietary stance, and the importance of challenging conventional wisdom. With a passion for helping others, he highlights the potential for a low-carb lifestyle to enhance athletic performance and well-being. Noakes’ insights not only inspire individuals to take charge of their health but also call for a broader reevaluation of dietary guidelines in sports and medicine.
In a rare and exciting interview, Professor Noakes shares his insight into using nutrition to reverse Type 2 diabetes and other chronic health issues.

Professor Noakes has published more than 750 scientific books and articles. He has been cited more than 19 000 times in scientific literature, has an H-index of 71 and is rated an A1 scientist by the National Research Foundation of South Africa.
After coming across research which denounced current international dietary guidelines as fallacy, Prof Noakes started researching the effects of carbohydrates, proteins and fats on the human race. His research convinced him that a high fat, low carb diet is the healthiest option for many.
After being left frustrated by a decline in his personal health, Prof Noakes has made it his mission to reverse the global trend and redefine the dietary guidelines.
The Noakes Foundation is the catalyst for this change. It seeks to reveal what genuine healthy nutrition looks like and, in doing so, make a difference in the lives of millions of people.
The Noakes Foundation
The Noakes Foundation is a Public Benefit Organization founded for public benefit which aims to advance medical science’s understanding of the benefits of a low-carbohydrate healthy high fat (LCHF) diet by providing evidence-based information on optimum nutrition.
The Foundation’s key goal is to change the way South Africa eats because the epidemics of obesity and type 2 diabetes are set to cripple national healthcare within the next 10 years. The Foundation purely relies on funding to carry out this mandate, visit our website to find out how you can help: www.thenoakesfoundation.org/donate
Eat Better South Africa!
The Noakes Foundation soon realised that the poorest communities around South Africa, whose
diets mainly consist of maize and maize products, are unaware of the dangers of excessive sugar
and carbohydrate consumption. This has resulted in an unprecedented increase in cases of
obesity, type 2 diabetes, and hypertension. Thus the Noakes Foundation team established Eat
Better South Africa! (EBSA) - the community outreach branch of The Foundation. EBSA’s goal
is to educate under resourced communities about good nutrition and to provide them with the
knowledge and the tools to make healthy and affordable food choices.
The Nutrition Network
The Nutrition Network is an education, connection and learning platform founded by The Noakes Foundation in partnership with an esteemed team of doctors and scientists. The platform has been designed exclusively for medical practitioners across all disciplines, covering the latest and most up-to-date science and research in the field of Low Carb Nutrition.

Tim Noakes, a leading figure in sports science and nutrition, provides a captivating exploration of the evolution of his dietary philosophy, which has shifted dramatically from high-carb to low-carb, high-fat diets. His personal battle with type 2 diabetes catalyzed this change, leading him to reconsider long-held beliefs about nutrition and its impact on health and athletic performance. Noakes shares anecdotes from his career, including the significance of his book 'The Real Meal Revolution,' which ignited a nutritional revolution in South Africa, challenging conventional dietary guidelines. He emphasizes the critical role of insulin resistance in chronic diseases and encourages a reevaluation of carbohydrate consumption for better health outcomes.
The episode further delves into Noakes' groundbreaking research on exercise physiology, where he posits that the brain plays a decisive role in regulating physical performance, rather than merely focusing on physiological factors like lactic acid buildup. This perspective not only revolutionizes our understanding of endurance but also offers practical insights for athletes looking to enhance their training and recovery. Noakes discusses his work with various athletes, including David Pocock, highlighting how a low-carb approach can lead to improved performance and recovery times, a revelation that could redefine training practices in competitive sports.
As the conversation unfolds, Noakes underscores the importance of education in nutrition, advocating for a societal shift in how we approach dietary choices. He urges individuals to take an active role in their health by questioning traditional dietary norms and embracing evidence-based nutrition. His call to action resonates deeply, aiming to inspire listeners to make informed choices that could significantly improve their quality of life. This episode is not just a discussion about diet; it is a passionate plea for a collective awakening to the power of nutrition in shaping our health and longevity.
