Why did Israel give up the Temple Mount

The explosion of violence in Israel during the past few weeks has been blamed by the Palestinians on Israel. The facts on the ground are completely different. The issue that has boiled to the surface is the accusation that being a "settler" is a war crime  and the question that has been raised along with it is "Why did Israel give up the Temple Mount in 1967?"
