The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Dr. Vernice L. Haddix. A student of aeronautics and formed Manager of Land Sight Operations at Sea-Tac Airport in Washington state, we’ll discuss Dr. Haddix’s 2022 dissertation: The Motivation to Lead and Black Men's Lived Experiences in Airport Management. Dr. Haddix highlights that there is a substantial lack of research on what motivates black males to seek leadership positions in the workplace and even less data on the black male experience in the field of aviation. To make it explicit, in 2020, the Federal Aviation Administration reported that: “Of the 519 U.S. primary commercial service airports, fewer than 10 are led by African American men.” We’ll explore the interviews that Dr. Haddix conducted with the rare black dude who manages a major airport.
