Hirveä helleaalto oli jämähtänyt Rein-joen varrella sijaitsevan Strasbourgin kaupungin ylle vuonna 1518. Oli polttavan kuuma keskipäivä, kun eräs nainen marssi kaupungin keskusaukiolle. Siellä hän ryhtyi villiin tanssiin, eikä suostunut lopettamaan.
