FMOOD 0122: Think Big Picture

In general, it's good to be in the present. However, I also think that it's important for us to anticipate the future as well. If we only look at our finances one week or even one month at a time, we miss opportunities that will benefit us in the future. This includes investing, saving for retirement, and other ways that we will eventually get into prosperity.   Thinking big picture may not come easy for some folks. This is especially true if you are currently having financial difficulties in the present, such as the ability to pay bills or ever-increasing debt burdens. This kind of trouble makes it challenging to think about what will benefit us in the future when we're trying to just get by in the here and now. However, if you expand your horizons and temporarily remove yourself from the present and place yourself in the future for just a bit, you can gain the benefits of thinking big picture.   I recommend trying to write down a financial goal that you would like to accomplish one year from now. It doesn't have to be a fully-completed goal; for example, if you are in debt but don't think that it's realistic to be out of debt completely in one year, then ask yourself what percentage of debt would you be able to have paid off in a year from now? Do you have a different goal that you've got your sights set on for one year from now? Perhaps it's to have six months of expenses saved up in a fully-funded emergency fund. Whatever your goal may be, the important thing is to put pen to paper and write it down.   Once you've established your goal that you'll reach one year from now, it's time to work backwards and break it down into more manageable time chunks. Think of what you have to do for the next twelve months in order to get to the finish line that you've established. Once you've established that timeline, the next step is to break it down into weeks and even days. It may be difficult for some goals to get that granular, but the whole point of this exercise is to train your brain to think big picture.
