This week, on The Conscious Consultant Hour, Sam welcomes doctor, speaker and author, Dr. Erica Elliott, M.D.
Dr. Elliott is a medical doctor with a private practice in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She served as a teacher for Indigenous children on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona and in the mountains of Ecuador.
In 1993, Dr. Elliott helped found The Commons, a cohousing community in Santa Fe where she raised her son and continues to live. She gave a TEDx talk about living in cohousing. Referred to affectionately as “the Health Detective,” she treats mysterious and difficult-to-diagnose illnesses at her clinic within The Commons. Erica is a frequent radio guest and has given workshops at various venues, including Esalen and Omega Institute.
Dr. Elliott has released her first book, Medicine and Miracles in the High Desert, which recounts the early years of her extraordinary life living among the Navajo people. As a young woman in the early 1970s, Erica arrives at a Navajo boarding school to teach and then becomes a student herself of mystical, earth-centered wisdom that has been lost to most in today’s modern world. As Erica reaches across a wide cultural divide to learn the Navajo language, the people begin to trust her and invite her into their homes, their ceremonies, and into their hearts.
Years later, Erica returns to serve the Navajo people as a medical doctor in an underserved clinic, performing emergency procedures and delivering babies. When a medicine man offers to thank her with a ceremony, more miracles unfold.
Sam and Dr. Elliott will discuss all her experiences with the Navajo and what we can all learn from them.

Segment 1
Sam starts this high-energy show with a message from his book Everyday Awakening. Sam speaks about how powerful you can be and the importance of speaking up for yourself. Dr. Elliott agrees with the importance of this message. Dr.Elliot proceeds to speak about her background as she grew up worldwide, which taught her to see life in other people's eyes.

Dr. Elliot, speaking with enthusiasm, tells the story of how she got close with her Navajo students, as well as learning Navajo. Dr. Elliot did so well as a teacher, members of Washington DC said Dr. Elliot should be the model for bilingual teaching.

Dr. Elliot proceeds with her remarkable story of teaching, where she got her students win a regional speaking competition. Dr. Elliot tells the power of love and why she left teaching and went on a 13 year journey away from Navajo.

Dr. Elliot lastly talks about multiple experiences that changed her. Dr. Elliot also talks about the importance of kinship in the Navajo culture. Finishing up this great episode with miracles she saw in her life because of the Navajo Culture.
